Preparation of a recording

Subject
When you are making a video production, you don't always have control over the timing of the recordings, for example, if you have to film an event organised by someone else. However if you write your own scenarios - for a comedy for example - you have more control over the timing and duration of the recordings yourself.

Location
You obviously have to determine where you want to shoot your film. If you yourself have written a scenario, you should look for the most suitable locations. Use this form to log relevant information about the various locations.

Time
To make the process of recording as smooth as possible, good preparation is absolutely essential.

  1. Scenario (storyboard) and planning
    Take your time to write a good scenario. The better your scenario is constructed, the smoother the recordings and editing will go afterwards. More info »
  2. Location visit
    Generously schedule time to visit and look around the selected sites, so you know the exact location of everything. Note possible peculiarities, interesting views and concerns, and make sketches or photographs.. More info »
  3. Casting actors/actresses and locating accessories
    Good actors/actresses and the right accessories can really make a movie, so make sure to find the right person for each role. More info »
  4. Create a script
    The script includes all possible information that you need to start your recording properly prepared. It contains the sequence of the recording, information on the scenes, information about the locations, the equipment needed and all other practical information. More info »
  5. Practise and rehearse .
    Always do some test shots before the actual shooting starts. That way, you can test the lighting, sound and text, and the actors have more practice. You can also view the test shots to check what should change.

During the recording

Log all shots that you make in a video log, so it is easier to find certain shots back afterwards.
